Simulation Research Roundup (September 2023)
Simulation Research Roundup (September 2023)
This month's highlights: VR boosting nursing education, advancing surgical training, and AI's potential to personalize healthcare simulations.

Here at i3 Simulations, we’re always up-to-date with new research in simulation, education, and Extended Reality (XR) technology. We’ve decided to share this knowledge through a monthly blog series, where we’ll be sharing the latest evidence on how XR simulations are transforming medical training.

Here’s what’s new this month: nursing students’ clinical skills and engagement in learning, virtual reality as an effective platform for advancing surgical skills training, and how artificial intelligence could be integrated into healthcare simulation to enable more personalised, adaptable, and realistic learning experiences.

Design and Evaluation of Using Head-Mounted Virtual Reality for Learning Clinical Procedures: Mixed Methods Study

Lau, S. T. et al. – JMIR Serious Games (Aug 2023)

This research demonstrates the potential of immersive virtual reality as an innovative educational tool for nursing skills training. The study developed a VR simulation system for clinical skills practice that yielded largely positive results – participants reported high levels of engagement, immersion, and beneficial learning experiences.

These findings highlight the value of leveraging VR to improve healthcare education, allowing the next generation of nurses to enter practice with enhanced skills and preparation for delivering improved patient care.
