This blog series will give primers for different VR simulations terms. To start: what do we mean by ‘non-linear learning’?

In traditional learning, you’re often guided through a linear process: learn a concept, practice it, get tested, and then progress to the next concept. This sequential approach has been a cornerstone of education for centuries. However, the dynamic world of clinical medicine often requires a more versatile approach to learning. Enter non-linear learning, augmented by the power of Virtual Reality (VR).

Non-linear learning isn’t strictly step-by-step; instead, it allows you to explore different aspects of a subject simultaneously, learning through the interconnections among them. It’s like giving your intuition the driver’s seat, enabling you to engage in experiential learning at the pace that works for you. This approach mirrors the way our minds naturally work: hopping from one idea to another, forming insights, and making connections along the way.

Now, imagine applying this to VR clinical training. You’re not just reading about a procedure or observing a demonstration – you’re actively immersed in a realistic, dynamic virtual environment. You can practice a procedure multiple times, try different approaches, and instantly observe the outcomes.

Take, for example, our Resuscitation VR product. Here, you navigate through various emergency scenarios, making rapid decisions as the lead physician. The unfolding of each scenario is non-linear, dependent on your actions and decisions, offering you a safe space to experience high-stakes situations and prepare for real-world emergencies.

Our multi-user simulations takes this a step further by allowing teams to engage in clinical training. Here, the outcomes hinge on the collective decisions and actions of the group, highlighting the non-linear dynamics of real-world clinical teamwork.

With our Diagnostic simulations, such as the Hypotensive Shock module, you’re in charge of diagnosing a patient’s condition. Your decisions guide the diagnostic process, with different choices leading you down different paths of diagnosis and treatment.
